Limit how many programs run at startup
There are a lot of programs that load automatically when you boot up your PC—which can really hamper performance. To manage these programs like a pro, learn how to get a comprehensive view of what's running:
1.Click the Start button , type System Configuration in the search box, and then click System Configuration in the list of results.
2.Click the Startup tab. The programs set to run at startup are indicated with a check mark. You can clear the check boxes for any nonessential programs to disable them, but make sure you only disable programs you're familiar with. When in doubt, don't clear the check box.
Clean up your system with CCleaner
As you use your PC, settings get corrupted, files get broken and data that's no longer needed can clog up the system. Fixing all these issues can be tricky and time consuming, but free system-cleaning tools such as CCleaner handle the hard work for you. Download the Cleaner from CCLEANER website and follow the installation instructions.
Once installed, click Start > All Programs > CCleaner.
In the CCleaner window, click the Analyze button to run a system scan - this may take a while to run. You get a long list of files that are no longer being used by Windows 7 with all of them automatically selected. Click the Run Cleaner button to clean out these files and speed up your PC.
Adjust visual effects
"Pretty is as pretty does,” my grandmother used to say. Maybe she wasn't referring to computers, but the principle still applies. Windows includes some stunning effects, but if you need more speed you can customize the settings you want to use for the appearance of Windows on your computer.
1.Click the Start buton , type Performance Information and Tools in the search box, and then click Performance Information and Tools in the list of results.
2.Click Adjust visual effects.
3.Here you can decide if you want to let Windows choose what's best for your computer, adjust for best appearance, or adjust for best performance.
Change indexing options
Windows indexes your hard disk for speedier searching, but background indexing can slow down your computer's overall performance. If your PC is dragging its heels, consider disabling this feature.
Click Start > Computer. In Windows Explorer, right-click your system drive (usually C:) and then click Properties.
On the General tab, untick the box next to Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties and click OK. In the confirmation box, make sure the option to apply changes to subfolders and files are selected and click OK.
Keep your PC up to date
One of the best things you can do to protect your PC is also one of the easiest: Make sure you are set up to get automatic updates from Microsoft. If you use Windows and other Microsoft software, such as Microsoft Office or Windows Live Essentials, then you should use the Microsoft Update service. You'll also get notices about new Microsoft software that you can download for free.
So how do you turn on automatic updates? Simple: Go to the Microsoft Update website. If you don't have automatic updates turned on, I am here to help you.
Tidy your desktop
Give your PC a speed boost by tidying up your desktop. Most people's desktops are cluttered with files, program shortcuts and other icons, but as Windows has to refresh these icons every so often, this can cause a slight slowdown. There's no need to delete them all - just create a single folder on your desktop called, for example, 'My Icons'. Then, drag and drop everything from your desktop into the new folder, from where they can be accessed any time you need them.
Get rid of unwanted programs
A clean machine is a fast machine. That means your best option is to uninstall all the programs you don't use. Delete things like trial software, limited-edition versions, and anything else you're never going to use. Antivirus software? Just testing. You always want your security program, but make sure you're only running a single, up-to-date program. To uninstall software:
1.Click the Start buton , and then click Control Panel.
2.Under Programs, click Uninstall a program. (If you don't see this page, change the View byoption in the upper-right corner to Category.)
3.Click the program you want to delete, and then click Uninstall.
Disk Defragmentation
Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer. Removable storage devices such as USB flash drives can also become fragmented. Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your disks and drives can work more efficiently. Disk Defragmenter runs on a schedule, but you can also analyze and defragment your disks and drives manually. To do this, follow these steps:
To defragment your hard disk
1. Open Disk Defragmenter by clicking the Start buton . In the search box, type Disk Defragmenter, and then, in the list of results, click Disk Defragmenter.
2. Under Current status, select the disk you want to defragment.
3. To determine if the disk needs to be defragmented or not, click Analyze disk. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Once Windows is finished analyzing the disk, you can check the percentage of fragmentation on the disk in the Last Run column. If the number is above 10%, you should defragment the disk.
4. Click Defragment disk. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Disk Defragmenter might take from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size and degree of fragmentation of your hard disk. You can still use your computer during the defragmentation process.

Routinely restart your computer
Restarting your PC clears out its memory. It also closes all the programs that are running on the PC, including those running in the background, so it's a good starting point if your computer seems to be running slow or behaving strangely.
To restart your Windows 7 computer, click the Start button and click the arrow in the bottom-right of the Start Menu. From the menu, choose Restart.
Clean your hard drive
The more you use your PC, the more programs you use and the more services you're running. Closing a program doesn't always close the service. That's why restarting fixes so many problems; it clears out the memory.
You should also make a habit of cleaning your hard disk to remove temporary files, emptying the Recycle Bin, and getting rid of system files you don't need any more:
1.Click the Start buton , type Disk Cleanup in the search box, and then click Disk Cleanup in the list of results.
2.After the utility runs, you'll see how much disk space you can free up.
3.Click OK, and then click Delete Files.
Repair hard disk errors
Windows 7's Error Checking utility can help avoid hard disk problems that can slow down performance and make it difficult to save or access your files. It scans the hard drive for bad sectors and for file system errors and then fixes them:
Close all open files. Click Start > Computer. Right-click the hard disk you want to check, then clickProperties from the pop-up menu. In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab. Under Error-checking, click the Check Now button.
To automatically repair files and folders problems that the scan reveals, select Automatically fix file system errors. For a more thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This will find and repair physical errors with the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete. You can tick both options. Click Start. It's best not to use your computer for any other tasks while the scan is checking for and repairing errors.
Turn off Windows visual effects
Windows' graphical effects look great but they can drain resources and slow down your computer. Disabling them can give you a big speed boost.
In Windows 7, right-click on an empty area of your desktop and from the pop-up menu selectPersonalize. Scroll down and select Windows 7 Basic – this will turn off most of the snazzy effects. Select Windows Classic for even more of a speed boost.
Empty your Recycle Bin
Your recycle bin is an area of your hard drive where you store 'deleted' files. As files can be recovered from the bin they still occupy precious hard disk space. Make your computer work faster by emptying this bin regularly.
First check that there's nothing in the bin that you want to keep. Then double click the icon on your desktop and from the menu that appears click Empty Recycle Bin. A warning box will appear.
Click Yes to permanently delete files.
Use anti-virus software
Anti-virus software protects your computer from viruses that can destroy your data, slow down or crash your computer, or allow spammers to send e-mail through your account. Anti-virus protection scans your computer and your incoming e-mail for viruses, and deletes them.
Keep your anti-virus software updated to cope with the latest bugs circulating the Internet. Most anti-virus software includes a feature to download updates automatically when you are online.
Make sure your anti-virus software is continually running and checking your system for viruses, especially if you are downloading files from the Web or checking your e-mail.
Set your anti-virus software to check for viruses when you first turn on your computer.
Give your system a thorough scan at least twice a month.
Recommended Anti-Virus Software:
- Avast
- Microsoft security essential
There are some other anti-virus software in the market. Most of them are good and the working process is almost same. There is a little difference among them. So don't worry if you use anti-virus software other than the recommended ones. Just make sure you use them to scan computer.
Thanks all and have a nice day
